Our walk this year was a great success! We had 169 people walking and many more people sponsoring and donating to help fight hunger. This year, we raised just at $10,000, and are excited about challenging ourselves to surpass this amount next year! This year we also introduced an online sponsoring website through CROP that helped raise $1500 of our total amount.
Through this event, we witness to a God of mercy and hope, but in our walking, we stand with all who struggle with hunger as equal people who need mercy and hope. The gift of life comes to us in Christ, and in response to this gift, we as a community of believers walk with this hope and promise for the needs and life of all.
So, what is a CROP Walk?
Organized by communities and local congregations throughout the United States, these events raise funds to help end hunger and poverty, and are getting underway in cities and town across the country. Walkers all over the country ask friends, families, and co-workers to support their efforts to end hunger. Sponsors may give their donations in cash, check, or even online with credit card. CROP Hunger Walks raise $15 million annually.
Why walk for Hunger?
With the global economy struggles...unemployed, low-income, and people living in poverty are finding it ever more difficult to provide ample nutritious food for their families. In direct response to the challenge of increasing access to nutritious food for hungry people around the corner and around the world, humanitarian agency Church World Service is sponsoring the Fall 2010 CROP Hunger Walk season as it has for many years. The first CROP Walk was in 1969 in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Where does the money raised go?
Of the money donated locally, 75% will go to Church World Service for global hunger related causes, and 25% will go to the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. On October 17th, walkers from our community gathered in the Marketplatz and walked-off at 3:00pm. Scout Troop 135 provided water bottles and a nice display on the need to recycle. There was a "Golden Mile" to walk, as well as a 5k that meandered through the beautiful streets of Fredericksburg. The weather was great and thank you to all who came out and sponsored to help bring us one step closer to making hunger history!
Join us next Fall for our annual CROP Walk!
